CAMP COMMENT
In grass roots football many times a team forms or recruits under a wave of fervour in a bid for success and progress. When and indeed if a peak is reached and passed and the gloss starts to disappear, unable to sustain, a return to mediocrity beckons.
Even on the Island success comes and goes. Clubs like St Helens, Binstead, Shanklin, similar to West Wight have history and good local support and these clubs have experienced periods of success, but West Wight Football Club is different. We are privileged to have good facilities, enthusiastic backing and a seemingly unending conveyor belt of talent. Some era’s have seen more success than others in its history West Wight has regularly challenged for titles, but through this time the club has progressed. It has not been a continuous upward surge, there have been blips, but each time we come back a little stronger. We are as strong now as ever, the football amenities, the desire the quality of the team, the support, the youth system. It is all built on foundations of community and tradition and it must continue to grow.
This development comes from hard work and sacrifice, determination and selflessness but the gains are immense, if often unappreciated,. WW members have busy lives, it’s a hectic world, but those giving up their time, is making our club greater all the time. From Ann doing the bar sometimes until 7 on match days, and much later on function nights. Trish’s endless and thankless organising. The players; Holmsey and Holmsey, Andy, Phil and Bubs giving up their evenings to tile, dig, fix, paint walls and remove old carpet, Dunn Coleman for putting carpet back again, Robbie and Phil making sure the football part happens, club captain Antony for his fundraising poker nights, Lino for being lino and cooking chilli’s, local business’ like Thorne’s Butcher’s and Rogers bricklaying for providing strips, Lenny for taking the quid’s, JT for his undiminished passion, Clarke around the grounds, Disco and Bally for putting the club on the global map, those people in Thailand, Sweden, the USA and Turkey who actually wanted to know about us, Grovesy who rumour has it actually put some money over the bar, like the other members are supporting the club by staying and having a drink and attending events. The list goes on.
So to everyone who plays, supports, works, attends; you are West Wight Football
Club.
